tools alone

Tools alone.

It’s hard to get the exact prices for your needs - but Salesforce Marketing Cloud gets expensive very quickly.

Let’s just say you coughed up for “Marketing Cloud Growth Edition”.

You’re looking at USD$18,000 a year.

There are companies that spend this amount and more.

And I’ve met just as many in the startup/scaleup world that have spent this amount for next to no outcome.

The problem - and it’s a big one - is that tools alone will never get the job done.

This applied back when we were homosapiens (I’m reading Sapiens at the moment!) and it still applies today.

It’s irrefutable.

AI is a tool.

It’s exciting, environmentally damaging, and nearly all of you have a pretty good picture of how I think about AI today 😉

But it’s still a tool.

A tool needs to be used by someone in order to be effective, no matter how shiny (or expensive) it is.

A person using a tool who knows what they’re doing will always outperform the person relying on just tools.

So look for people who the tools or are capable of learning them.

Or better yet - as a founder you can benefit from learning how to use them.

Yours toolfully 🔧

Hi Reader, Have you noticed I play with the greeting each week? I like personalisation, but don’t have everyone’s first name in my list because you’ve arrived in different ways. Sometimes I just like calling you all fam - this isn’t a large list, and I just love that there’s a humble cohort of people that welcome and read this email most weeks. Fun quote from a friend other day: “I knew we had this catch-up booked - so I binge read your newsletter in advance” Thanks Ross 🤣 For those of you...

Hey fam, Is there anything happening in AI right now? Just kidding lmfao - that's stupid. But if you’re newish to this newsletter - welcome! I write about 3 topics each week usually centred around growth, impact, and strong opinions. This week we’re covering (checks notes): Hacking the press cycle Novel use case: interviewing your “ideal customer” for your website Building a lead generation machine with AI (another presentation) I’m keen as mustard to get into the meat of this, so let’s make...
