tools alone

Tools alone.

It’s hard to get the exact prices for your needs - but Salesforce Marketing Cloud gets expensive very quickly.

Let’s just say you coughed up for “Marketing Cloud Growth Edition”.

You’re looking at USD$18,000 a year.

There are companies that spend this amount and more.

And I’ve met just as many in the startup/scaleup world that have spent this amount for next to no outcome.

The problem - and it’s a big one - is that tools alone will never get the job done.

This applied back when we were homosapiens (I’m reading Sapiens at the moment!) and it still applies today.

It’s irrefutable.

AI is a tool.

It’s exciting, environmentally damaging, and nearly all of you have a pretty good picture of how I think about AI today 😉

But it’s still a tool.

A tool needs to be used by someone in order to be effective, no matter how shiny (or expensive) it is.

A person using a tool who knows what they’re doing will always outperform the person relying on just tools.

So look for people who the tools or are capable of learning them.

Or better yet - as a founder you can benefit from learning how to use them.

Yours toolfully 🔧

AI versus Marshy

I call out big tech company bullsh*t, avoid hype, and show scaling companies how to grow with AI.

Hey readers, We’re now two weeks away from ChatGPT being 3 years old. It’s safe to say awarness is close to “your uncle telling you to buy bitcoin” stage now. I’ve done my best to cover it. Partly out of morbid curiosity, partly out of bemusement, and partly out of the belief that this technology is (eventually) going to fundamentally change everything. Yet clashing with that belief is a recurring question: “Are we fucked?” Why does it keep popping up? Well - have you seen the movie The Big...

Hello stranger! Welcome to another edition of AI versus Marshy. Something unfortunate happened since last edition - I started writing a “let’s go deep on a topic” edition to change things up. Then it got too large, and the tool I was covering wasn’t as easy to use as originally hoped, and things got stuck. So then I abandoned ship, got really busy with client work (good), then went ahead and started writing another edition covering Claude Skills and some other things and then go stuck again!...

a man tying a knot against a fence

Ahoy and welcome to another edition of AI versus Marshy! It’s the newsletter that charts AI through the lens of impact, growth, and technology. It’s learn-in-public style, readers say they love the deep-dives, opinions, and dissembling of information that takes place here because it’s genuine, thought-out, and not full of crap. I was thinking about what to write about this week, and thought I’d put to paper some predictions based on what I am seeing as a freelance consultant. Like all...
